    Standard Fruit tree pruning

We provide standard fruit tree pruning services for most varieties of small to medium sized fruit trees. In almost all instances the recommended time of year to prune fruit trees is in late winter. Pruning before bud break is important to insure maximum flowering and fruit production. It is during this period that we recommend yearly nitrogen (N) fertilization and boron (B) applications once every three years to assist with fruit set.

A little about Tree Pruning

We will evaluate all of your trees and provide recommendations for the best course of action for your yard.

Have you ever thought about having your small trees pruned?  Did you know that properly pruned trees live a longer, healthier life?

Small tree pruning around your property will help create a flourishing environment for your landscape.  Tree pruning involves the removal of diseased, dead, or broken branches from your trees.  With respect to young trees, pruning is vital to healthy growth and development.  Pruning will ensure that your small trees are growing with structural integrity and a desirable branch layout.  The early years of a tree’s life are the most important for ensuring longevity and good health, so it’s important to pay close attention to these trees while they’re young.

Small trees also have a higher risk of long-term damage from diseases and pests.  Many species of fungi exist that can penetrate the bark of your tree branches, ultimately affecting other areas of the tree.  Larger, mature trees can handle the stresses of insect feeding and defoliation well, but only if they grew up in a flourishing way.

Pruning also removes weak branches that would be likely to fall during stormy conditions – which could damage the small plants in your garden and make a mess in your yard.  Keeping up with your small tree pruning will maximize the beauty of your landscape and help keep your yard well-maintained.

Pruning is such an important component of your trees’ health and longevity, so make sure you stay on top of it!

what type of trees do you work with?

At Yard Gig we work exclusively on small to medium sized trees that generally do not exceed 20’ in height. For larger trees an arborist (someone that specializes in tree care,) is needed. We are happy to provide you with a recommendation. Aside from that we work on almost every species of tree whether coniferous or deciduous. We however, do not offer topiary work.

dO YOU PROVIDE STUMP REMOVAL OR GRINDING SERVICES?

At this time Yard Gig does NOT provide stump removal or grinding services. We can provide you with a referral to someone that does if you are in need.

do you provide tree removal services?

Generally no, an arborist would be needed for that type of work.

My tree has a utility line running through it to my home can you prune them.

We do NOT. In most cases this occurs with trees that are planted in a parking strip area of someone’s property (on the street side of the sidewalk.) In those instances the utility company likely your electric utility company that owns the line as well as the pole its attached to are solely responsible for their upkeep. The utility under City of Portland’s code TITLE 11 TREES is responsible for maintaining the safety of that line. Before proceeding we recommend you contact your electric utility company. for more information see Portland General Electric, or Pacific Power’s website if your located in the Metro area.

For more information we always recommend referring to our friends at The Oregon Master Gardeners program. Administered by Oregon’s Land Grant University, OSU’s extension service. For specific information about pruning fruit trees follow this link.
